With a little practice, most people can be hypnotized and can use self-hypnosis. Hypnosis allows us to experience thoughts, fantasies and images as almost real. It also plays a role in pain and stress management. Besides, it can change certain behaviours, such as studying and concentration, help control anger and sadness, build self-esteem, reduce bad habits, and so on.
STEP ONE: Become familiar with self-hypnosis and/or mental imagery.
Learn about the basics of hypnosis, including techniques and steps for inducing self-hypnosis. Then, practice these techniques several times with a goal in mind; of what you are trying to achieve with this method. It is best to ask a professional help regarding questions of self-hypnosis.
STEP TWO: Prepare a specific method for inducing self-hypnosis.
You may want to be hypnotized by a trained person first; he/she can then teach you how to do self-hypnosis. You can memorize or record the general induction process into an audiotape and give self- instructions. First of all find a quiet, peaceful and comfortable place for the related procedure. Then, imagine your whole body relaxing. Then in time of quietness, a recording of self-instructions can then be played, lasting about 3 minutes. Give yourself time to absorb then slowly come out of the hypnosis. Stretch a bit before going on your way.
STEP THREE: Develop self-improvement instructions to give yourself during hypnosis.
The self-instructions may reflect a new attitude towards others or yourself, a different way of thinking and so on. Words used should be simple but used repeatedly. Besides that, it should be believable, desirable, used positively for a specific time and most importantly provide a visual image of the suggested outcome. Write your own instructions for any desired change, e.g. if you are not motivated at work or at school, write self-suggestions about having the drive and determination to change, seeing the importance of that change and the wonderful possible outcomes.
STEP FOUR: Get prepared and have the experience daily.
Find a quiet, private place without any distractions to perform the 20 minutes session. Have your self-instructions ready. Go through the entire routine as you planned it. Develop a routine so that you will have the experience at the same time every day. Be patient, it takes time to learn any new skill (use it daily for at least a month). Measure your progress.
